Students For Liberty is a rapidly growing network of pro-liberty students from all over the world. Our mission is to provide a unified, student-driven forum of support for students and student organizations dedicated to liberty. We accomplish this through a strategy of empowerment, identifying the top student leaders and training them to be agents of change in their communities. What began as a small meeting of young leaders has become an international movement of students with over 1,100 groups around the world and operations on every inhabited continent.

On Liberty:  Liberty is a key concept of classical liberalism. Most people forget liberty is associated with responsibility. Liberty means we have the right to think, feel, and do things for ourselves and we must be responsible for our actions. Making mistakes is part of learning process. Classical liberalism believes that people can reach their full potential if we give them the right to be secure in their life, liberty, and property. Do not forget, freedom does not mean we can do anything without any limitation. The limit of our freedom is somebody else’s freedom.

On SFL:     SFL is an excellent platform to advance my knowledge and network. Since I recognized SFL, I have met a lot of amazing people from all over the world who are fighting for the same cause and I learned a lot from them. More importantly, realizing that we are not alone in this movement keeps my optimism high for creating a freer and more prosperous world.

Joseph J. Bautista

Executive Board member

Joseph J. Bautista has been a passionate advocate of liberty for the longest time. Having founded and started Students for Liberty Philippines (SFL PH) in 2016, he has been organizing events, doing rounds of public speaking, and experimenting with different ways of both getting the general public to consider the ideas of liberty and how to personalize training the next set of SFL leaders. As a self-proclaimed technology nerd, Joseph has been channelling his energy on promoting liberty through the things he tinkers with and builds ranging from software development, machine learning/deep learning modelling, mechanical and electrical engineering, internet of things, et al. He believes that technology companies and generally the private sector are the biggest movers of social change. Staying true to his beliefs, he hopes to make his mark with both his current involvement in the local startup scene and his commitment to SFL.

Favorite figure: Richard Feynman, Ludwig von Mises, David Hume, Milton Friedman, David Friedman

On Liberty: Liberty is such a deep and meaningful word that it becomes a challenge to unpack it in a few sentences. However, one can say that liberty is the bedrock of which everything stands. The ability to think, speak and act in ways that do not violate the equal ability of others to do so are joyous activities that define most of our daily lives. The opposite of it sounds like a restrictive and insanity-driving life.

On SFL:  SFL is an organization that breeds entrepreneurial leaders. These leaders are entrepreneurial in a sense that they act when they see spaces or opportunities to create value. SFL does not dictate what you ought to be as a leader specifically but instead provides a framework of leadership that promotes liberty that can be shaped and morphed to whichever field a member is in. A person in technology will have a different approach to promoting liberty than someone in politics, but at the end of the day, both individuals have the same goal of advancing liberty in their own ways. That is the beauty of spontaneous order that exists within our organization.

On Liberty: Liberty is about accepting and taking up responsibility for yourself. These two ideas are inseparable because it means that the individual is granted the opportunity of choice and the burden of it if he makes suboptimal decisions. Liberty is the enablement of an individual to steer his own fate in the direction he takes and not succumb to nihilistic ideas like postmodernism and determinism.

On SFL:  SFL has enabled me to find the direction I have always wanted to have in life. Being a part of SFL is beyond the glitz and glamour of conference, travel and network opportunities it provides, but it is about having the ability to find yourself through the embodiment of classical liberal principles and setting the course and direction you want in life instead of being another cog in the wheel.
