SFL Leader Threatened for Speaking Out

In today’s college environment, the new normal is speech codes and political correctness. Even the simplest and most innocent of statements sparks backlash and aggression from fellow students and professors. It’s even gotten to the level of threats and harassment for those who don’t go along with the program. That’s what Campus Coordinator and MacIver Institute Intern Jessica Murphy has had to endure for the last week. In a blog post for the MacIver Institute, Wisconsin’s free market think tank, she outlined the “Top Five Wasteful Classes in the UW System.” This included classes on “teaching for social justice,” “the history of Hip Hop,” “exploring white privilege,” and “Social Science in the Marxist Tradition.” An associate professor of philosophy at the school, who teaches the […]

SFL Around the World: April 2017

Here’s what SFL-ers around the world accomplished this April: Charter Teams Starting off with Japan, a country that has seen little to no libertarian activism in the past (with the noble exception of Chiaki Nishiyama, a former president of the prestigious Mont Pélérin Society), we are very happy to announce the founding of a new SFL chapter in the land of the rising sun. Meanwhile, Students For Liberty Korea put together a brand-new homepage that’s absolutely worth checking out. The same goes for our group in Singapore, which is also only about to get started. Their website, which you can find here, also contains an impressive section on “Learning Liberalism,” a project they have been working on during the last year. Speak Freely Summit
A Day of Education in College Park

The following was written by Campus Coordinator and Speak Freely Advocate Caitlyn Tierney.  Last weekend, I traveled to College Park, Maryland for the first annual Speak Freely Summit, hosted by Students for Liberty. The conference was a fantastic melting pot of ideas and speakers, including commercial, political, and international points of view. We heard from Jim Caruso, CEO of Flying Dog Brewery, and learned the details of his fight to protect free speech in the craft brewing industry, despite pushback from the state of Michigan. Caruso was an engaging speaker, and the free samples of Flying Dog beer were a great bonus! gave a presentation on getting published in the liberty movement, including tips and advice to submit the best writing possible. It was awesome […]

Are We in Retreat or in Decline?

The following was written by ESFL Local Coordinator David Borovsky. It was originally posted here. Not a long time has passed from the latest economic crisis, and some economists are trying to scare us, saying that another one (even worse) is behind the corner. People split when it comes to what caused it (a usual fight between Austrians and Keynesians). Europe is facing a huge migration crisis due to destabilized Middle East, populists are on the rise — one of them became a U.S. president — the European Union is probably in its worst shape to date, horrific terrorist attacks were committed by Islamists, tensions with authoritarian regimes like Putin’s Russia are high, and oh — I almost forgot — machines are stealing our jobs! All […]

SFL Around the World: March 2017

Here’s what SFL-ers around the world accomplished this March: Charter Teams Charter Teams might be the smallest region within Students For Liberty, but that doesn’t mean our coordinators on the ground aren’t doing fantastic work to advance human flourishing and well-being. Southeast Asia had an especially good month in March! The team in Hong Kong brought together over 1,000 people for a panel on “The Morality of Business” and two talks by human rights activist Yeonmi Park.  Charter Teams Member Tyler Prochazka also organized a great conference on the Universal Basic Income in Taiwan, and our leaders in the Philippines are working to plan their first-ever Regional Conference, which is set to take place in Manila this May.
