SFL Around the World: April 2017

Here’s what SFL-ers around the world accomplished this April: Charter Teams Starting off with Japan, a country that has seen little to no libertarian activism in the past (with the noble exception of Chiaki Nishiyama, a former president of the prestigious Mont Pélérin Society), we are very happy to announce the founding of a new SFL chapter in the land of the rising sun. Meanwhile, Students For Liberty Korea put together a brand-new homepage that’s absolutely worth checking out. The same goes for our group in Singapore, which is also only about to get started. Their website, which you can find here, also contains an impressive section on “Learning Liberalism,” a project they have been working on during the last year. Speak Freely Summit
A Day of Education in College Park

The following was written by Campus Coordinator and Speak Freely Advocate Caitlyn Tierney.  Last weekend, I traveled to College Park, Maryland for the first annual Speak Freely Summit, hosted by Students for Liberty. The conference was a fantastic melting pot of ideas and speakers, including commercial, political, and international points of view. We heard from Jim Caruso, CEO of Flying Dog Brewery, and learned the details of his fight to protect free speech in the craft brewing industry, despite pushback from the state of Michigan. Caruso was an engaging speaker, and the free samples of Flying Dog beer were a great bonus! gave a presentation on getting published in the liberty movement, including tips and advice to submit the best writing possible. It was awesome […]

Are We in Retreat or in Decline?

The following was written by ESFL Local Coordinator David Borovsky. It was originally posted here. Not a long time has passed from the latest economic crisis, and some economists are trying to scare us, saying that another one (even worse) is behind the corner. People split when it comes to what caused it (a usual fight between Austrians and Keynesians). Europe is facing a huge migration crisis due to destabilized Middle East, populists are on the rise — one of them became a U.S. president — the European Union is probably in its worst shape to date, horrific terrorist attacks were committed by Islamists, tensions with authoritarian regimes like Putin’s Russia are high, and oh — I almost forgot — machines are stealing our jobs! All […]

SFL Around the World: March 2017

URGENT: Support Venezuelan Students

The following was written by Lilian Lucena, EsLibertad Executive Board President. #NoMasDictadura #PorUnaVenezuelaLibre Venezuelans need your help. This Thursday, March 29, 2017, the socialist regime of Nicolas Maduro has confirmed his dictatorship by consolidating power: the Supreme Court, already under his control, ascribed itself all legislative attributions that were previously the responsibility of Congress. This ruling is notoriously unconstitutional, not only because it is issued against the government body where the Venezuelan people are represented, but also as a violation of the separation of powers characteristic of a Republic and necessary for a Democracy. This shameful attack calls for an urgent action and a global support for all Venezuelans. This is why Estudiantes por la Libertad in Latin America invites you today to denounce on social […]

Coup in Venezuela
Students Need Your Support

We’ve just gotten word from Estudiantes por la Libertad (EsLibertad) staff that the situation in Venezuela is deteriorating rapidly after President Maduro moved to solidify his power by stripping the National Assembly of its authority through a high court action. CNN says: The court ruled that all powers vested under the legislative body will be transferred to the Supreme Court, which is stacked with government loyalists. The ruling effectively means the three branches of the Venezuelan government will be controlled by the ruling United Socialist Party. The opposition has been taken out of the picture. EsLibertad Program Director Julio Clavijo reports: He is formalizing the dictatorship the country was living in. There is a high possibility that presidential elections which are due to take place in […]
