You Will Go To Jail for This

“Overcriminalization,” which is the use and abuse of the criminal law instead of civil or administrative law to “solve” every societal problem and punish every mistake, is an unfortunate trend. The criminal law should be used to redress only blameworthy conduct, actions that truly deserve the greatest punishment and moral sanction. In many African societies, police are neither respected nor appreciated. They are feared and avoided and looked upon with scorn. Why is this so? They are supposed to serve and protect the people. The absence of the rule of law helps to create a space for police brutalities to go unpunished. Governments are fond of enacting criminal laws to score political points with an electorate that has been led to believe that outlawing more and […]

Our focus in South Asia is to help students become informed and critical thinkers about ideas pertaining to the political economy of their nation. An uninformed and passive exercise of thought leads to bad judgment, and bad judgment leads to support for bad policies. Students For Liberty believes that in the marketplace of ideas, the good ones root out the bad ones. But the ideas of freedom – individual rights, toleration, rule of law – that have been the foundation of successful nations are poorly represented in mainstream dialogue. Students Need Your Support

We’ve just gotten word from Estudiantes por la Libertad (EsLibertad) staff that the situation in Venezuela is deteriorating rapidly after President Maduro moved to solidify his power by stripping the National Assembly of its authority through a high court action. CNN says: The court ruled that all powers vested under the legislative body will be transferred to the Supreme Court, which is stacked with government loyalists. The ruling effectively means the three branches of the Venezuelan government will be controlled by the ruling United Socialist Party. The opposition has been taken out of the picture. EsLibertad Program Director Julio Clavijo reports: He is formalizing the dictatorship the country was living in. There is a high possibility that presidential elections which are due to take place in […]
